Standards and guidelines
We support disability-led organisations, global communities, and local initiatives working towards digital equality.
W3C participation
40% of our team are active members of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), attending regular meetings across seven working groups. We don’t just join accessibility-focused groups, we participate in working groups across all areas so we can make accessibility part of everything W3C does. Léonie Watson, one of our directors, also serves as chair of the W3C board of directors.
Who it helps
Millions of people around the world who rely on accessible web standards.
Why it matters
We help shape policies that are used globally to hold organisations accountable and to make technology that works for everyone. Being actively involved also benefits us by keeping us close to the development of emerging standards, giving us early insight into changes that affect our customers, and ensuring our advice is informed, timely, and grounded in real-world discussions.
Inclusive Design Principles (IDP)
We maintain and promote the Inclusive Design Principles, which are open, practical guidelines for building inclusive digital experiences. You can find out more in our guide to the Inclusive Design Principles.
Who it helps
The Inclusive Design Principles have global reach and are referenced across industries, governments, and educational institutions helping to inform inclusive design across a variety of interfaces including websites, native apps, chatbots, voice apps, wearables and more.
Why it matters
The Inclusive Design Principles help make inclusive thinking easy to adopt at any stage of the design and development process. Working on the principles also helps us shape and improve how we support customers, encouraging us to think critically about how we apply inclusion and accessibility in a world where technology is evolving rapidly and must go beyond compliance. They are used as educational and source materials in places such as:
